Registration is available for the “Week of Service,” Oct. 17 to 22, a volunteer clean-up program that helps keep America’s Finest City clean and clutter-free.

The program is open to City’s students, faculty, staff and administrators who are interested in making a difference in the community.

St. Vincent de Paul is looking for 48 volunteers. Balboa Park is asking for upwards of 160 people to assist. Cabrillo National Monument and the bay clean-up project both need 50 able bodies.

Lori Oldham, the Student Affairs Coordinator, told City Times that last year more than 400 pounds of litter were removed from the bay alone.

“The (Week of Service) will benefit the city of San Diego and seems to energize and invigorate those who come out to help,” she said.

St. Vincent de Paul will serve volunteers free breakfast, lunch and dinner. Volunteers are needed to serve cooks, preps and servers.

At the Cabrillo National Monument, volunteers can help clean up, wash windows, remove trash and weed the garden area. As a bonus, park rangers will provide volunteers and their family a guided tour of the park grounds and the historic Point Loma lighthouse.

California Coast Keepers will provide kits for those who want to help clean-up the bay.

Clean-ups begin Oct. 17, with multiple shifts available daily through Oct. 22. The Week of Service was awarded The President’s Volunteer Service Award in 2014 and The Mayoral Volunteer Recognition Award in 2015.

To register, or for more information, please contact Oldman in Student Affairs at (619) 388-3106, or visit www.sdcity.edu and click on the Week of Service link.

Oldham had a request for those that register, however, “If you sign up, please show up.”
