Marking the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which will extend through October, the San Diego City College volleyball team (1-8) fell, 3-0, to Grossmont on Wednesday, Oct. 1.
Sophomores Lauren Eastman and Cassandra Stevens spoke about the significance of connecting sports to raising awareness of breast cancer by wearing pink jerseys and accessories.
“We play with everything we can give because someone out there may not be able to,” Stevens said.
Eastman expressed how close to home wearing pink was to her.
“I do have people close in my life that have had (breast cancer), and people who have beat it,” she said. “When I put this pink jersey on every single day of October, even our warm-up shirts, it does make me think of them a little bit extra.”
The Knights fought through every set but still could not get ahead, ending with a 25-11, 25-12, 25-16 finish for Grossmont.

Eastman shared one of the setbacks of the match was the inconsistent service errors.
“I’d say our biggest thing is we do need to just kind of get our serves in.” Eastman said. “It sucks giving the other teams a free little point like that.”
Before the start of the third set, there was a change of positions for Stevens.
Stevens began the match as an outside hitter, where she continued to play until the end of the second set. She played the third set in the opposite color as the libero for the Knights.

When asked if the change of jersey affected the mood of the game, she quickly stated that it did not.
“I know what my role is. I know the role that I need to play when I put this jersey on,” Stevens said.
The Knights’ next home game will be on Oct. 22 at Harry West Gym.
