In the final seconds of the second overtime in the San Diego City College men’s basketball season-opening game against East Los Angeles, the ball ended up in the hands of freshman Andrew Azebeokhai Jr.
Not only was it Azebeokhai’s first college game, but his first overtime.
“I just happened to get the rebound,” Azebeokhai said, “put it back up with the time, and that was game.”
That winning basket, a put-back jumper from inside the paint with 1.2 left on the clock, concluded the first home game of the season for the Knights, giving City the 90-88 victory over the Huskies at Harry West Gym on Nov. 1.
The victory for No. 14 City over No. 8 East LA came before a crowd of 300 erupted to their feet, cheering alongside the Knights after the final buzzer.
“The fans were awesome,” sophomore Cyprian Hyde said. “I haven’t seen anything like that in a while.”

The Knights fought through the last seconds of regulation despite being down 71-69 with :44 remaining. Sophomore Junior Camacho tied the game for the team, 71-71, 10 seconds later with a layup that led into the first overtime.
City did not lead in points until the last two minutes of the first overtime when Hyde scored a three, creating a one-point lead for the Knights.
With 1:10 left in the first overtime, Hyde made a free throw, tying the game at 78-78. The score remained unchanged through the end of the first overtime.
City then continued to push through the second overtime, when Hyde scored a jump shot, tying the score at 88-88 against the Huskies with 45 seconds left.
Hyde led all scorers with 27 points, three rebounds and two assists, with Camacho coming off the bench with 23 points.
“(Hyde) was huge for us,” Azebeokhai said. “Without him, we wouldn’t have been able to win that game.”
The ending did not create any additional pressure for City, according to Hyde.
“We play high-pressure (basketball) at practice every day,” Hyde said.
This game marks head coach Mitch Charlens’ 399th win with the Knights.
The men’s basketball team will be on the road until Dec. 17, when they play against Grossmont at 7 p.m. at Harry West Gym.
