Campus to present festival of plays by students

For the first time, City College is presenting plays written by students. A “Festival of New Works,” consisting of six original scripts and one monologue, will be presented March 4, 5, 11 and 12.

The plays will be: “The Dark Knight Cometh,” by Brody Gogatz; “Kitchen Altercation” by Megan Malan; “The Wallet” by Marie Malham; “The Tools of their Tools” by Michelle Malham; “The Sly Man” by Whitney Mathis; “My Good and Faithful Servant” by Brett Morris; and “Death’s Monologue” by Daniel Sosa-Porter.

Brody Gogatz described his play as “William Shakespeare coming up with the idea of Batman,” in an email. He is also assisting in the direction of two other plays, “The Wallet” and “Death’s Monologue.”

“I’m very excited to be a part of San Diego City College’s first Festival of New Works. It is an honor to have my play be selected,” Gogatz said.

The co-chair of the Visual and Performing Arts Department, Katie Rodda, said the festival would bring something different to City College, “Turn it over, you know, sort of have a little bit more variety.”

Rodda wants audience members to be engaged in a different way than they would be with musicals because these plays were written by City students, so students should be able to identify themselves in some way in these works.

The festival will take place March 4, 5, 11 and 12 at 8 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre, located in the Arts and Humanities building, in room 320. General admission is $15; it’s $10 for for students, seniors, military and San Diego Community College District employees.
