ONLINE EXCLUSIVE: Jets sweep women’s soccer

The City College Knights women’s soccer team played their fifth home game of the season on Tuesday Sept. 21 against the Jets from Miramar College.

The 6—0 defeat suffered by City was their seventh of the season; however, it doesn’t fully tell the story of how well the Knights fought in the second half. Unfortunately, the first half of play saw the Jets put three goals past the keeper before 20 minutes had expired in the 12, 14 and 16 minutes, and a fourth in the 32 minute.

In the second half though, the Knights defense began to wake up and make some crucial stops, in large part thanks to the keeper, Claudia Quiroz. The Knight’s head coach Andi Milburn had this to say of her keepers performance, “Quiroz had 17 saves in the game [and] she and our captains are doing their best to lead our young team.” Quiroz also had two important kick saves where she had to leave her line and come out to the edge of the 18 yard box to stop an onrushing attacker.

Even with the improved play in the back, the Jets relentless attack managed to have the Knights fishing the ball out of the back of their own net twice more within ten minutes of the restart of play in the 50 and 55 minutes.

Although the defense seemed to have worked out its problems by the hour mark, the Knights lacked a real threat up front, with their best chance at scoring coming in the 59 minute when the Knights caught the Jets pushed too far forward and countered. However, the Jets keeper had the ball tracked the entire way.

“This is a rebuilding year for us, with a squad of all freshmen,” says Milburn. In the end, the Knights deserved a better score line had they only started the game defensively as well as they finished it, and had more attacking options up front.
