Punk legend to make appearance at Spreckles

The godmother of punk rock music will return to San Diego after an eight-year absence with a reading from her novel, Just Kids.

Singer, songwriter, poet and visual artist Patti Smith made her last appearance in San Diego at Street Scene in 2004. She is finally back for the “Downtown with Patti Smith” presentation at Spreckles Theatre on Saturday, Oct. 13.

The book chronicles her relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. She writes about their time spent growing up in the New York City arts scene and describes living in the now infamous Chelsea Hotel.

Smith was propelled to fame in 1975 with her debut studio album “Horses” which is often cited by music critics and fans as one of the greatest albums of all time.

Her fusion of rock and roll, poetry and the visual arts has made her an integral influence in the punk rock movement. In 2007, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Smith will read excerpts from Just Kids at Spreckles Theatre, revisiting her legendary past and the poems and the music that inspired a generation.

There will be a book signing of Just Kids following Smith’s reading. Books will be available for purchase at the event courtesy of Warwick’s bookstore.

Doors open at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $35 and can be purchased through UCSD ArtPower, Ticketmaster, or the Spreckles Theatre box office.
