City College has the good fortune of having its own radio station right here on campus with many great upcoming events that everyone can enjoy by either tuning in to Jazz 88.3 or by attending any one of the many scheduled concerts over the next few months.
For those of you who may not know this, Jazz 88.3 not only plays great jazz, but it also is a great resource for those of you who might be interested in San Diego theatre arts. Pat Launer, longtime San Diego reviewer, brings her experience and opinions, to KSDS 88.3 FM every week with updates of what is playing around town. Tune in, or log on to www.jazz88.org//centerStage.php for current reviews, or archived reviews of shows around town.
As for jazz, everyday is chock full of many different types of jazz ranging from Brazilian Jazz to Latin Jazz, and from World Music to Blues. Whatever your tastes may be in music, they seem to have all bases covered. Log on to www.jazz88.org//calendar.php for an updated calendar of what you can expect to hear every day, every week, every month.
One upcoming live concert of note is Eldar, accomplished musician and jazz pianist. Eldar, 20, brings his version of jazz to the Saville Theatre on Nov. 11. This young man, born in Kyrgyzstan in the former Soviet Union, came to the US when he was nine. He has since recorded three albums and received a 2008 Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. Although he currently resides in NYC, he did live here in San Diego and attended Francis W. Parker School and went on to get is degree in music in Los Angeles at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music.
After hearing his music, I would say don’t miss this concert. His music is energetic and exciting, reminiscent of a young Dave Grusin in the making.
Jazz 88 Members can enjoy free admission (plus a guest), non-members will be charged $10 (based on availability), and City College students can get in for $5 with a valid student ID.
