The San Diego City College volleyball team beat Cuyamaca College (26-24, 25-14, 25-21), en route to their second straight 3-0 sweep Oct. 23.
City was led by sophomore Allison Wygal, who recorded her second straight double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs, including the match-ending kill in the third set.
After the match, Wygal and her teammates sang along to “Celebration” by Kool and the Gang as it echoed throughout Harry West Gym. Wygal then detailed her team’s comradery despite their 4-10 record.
“I think compared to past years and other teams I’ve been on, we definitely have a team where everybody has something in common and everybody can talk to each other and feel comfortable,” Wygal said.
The Knights were also buoyed by freshmen Tayen Orr (14 kills), Cassie Stevens (17 digs) and Lauren Eastman (13 assists), as well as by sophomore Cordelia Gipson (21 assists).
The event was well attended, with attendees lining up before the doors opened.
The event, organized by athletic director Aaron Detty, offered the first 250 attendees free burritos, a pink City College breast cancer awareness t-shirt and resources from the campus mental health center.
“This event was amazing,” Detty said. “We’re more than just an athletics program. We’re about our community and trying to make sure that we make our mark and try and make changes for the better.”
Attendees were encouraged to donate at least $1 to the cause. According to Detty, donations totaled $435 with over 250 people in attendance.
Members of City’s basketball, baseball, softball and cross-country teams were among those contributing to the cause and cheering on the volleyball team.
City volleyball will be back at Harry West Gym, Friday, Oct. 25 to face Palomar College (13-4) at 5 p.m. and will have their last home match Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 5 p.m. against San Diego Mesa College (17-1) before playing their last three matches on the road.
