City Gallery at San Diego City College held its opening reception on Feb. 6 for its ‘S/M/L’ exhibition that continues until March 27, 2025. 

The gallery showcases work that reflect the experiences and issues of the world in which we all live in today, according to the City Gallery website. ‘S/M/L’ features San Diego artists Katy Mixon, Bridget Rountree and Bill Mosley.

“I’m connected to the ocean,” featured artist Bill Molsey said. “That big image (with) the iceberg blending with Qualcomm stadium and those blue stripes, it’s a fantasy. It’s the illusion of the sea level as it gets larger.”

Mosley’s work is largely impacted by his experiences watching San Diego develop into a major city. It’s also a reflection of his time working with environmental artists Newton and Helen Harrison.

“I’m not a (climate) activist on the same level they (Newton and Helen) are, but that’s part of the motivation,” Mosley said.

In addition to being spotlighted in City Gallery, artists spoke to students in fine arts classes at City College. 

“We have a beautiful space. We want our students to meet artists and our students to understand what an opening is,” Anna Delgado, a Fine Arts professor at City said.

City Gallery gives students the opportunity to get connected with local artists and elevate their own work. 

“Not a lot of community colleges have galleries,” Rowan Phan, a graphic design student, said. “It (shows) students how an art gallery works. There’s students who haven’t been to a gallery before so I think it’s really cool.”
