Cafeteria (feature) story

Around campus, a lot of things go on at the same time and in the same place. This place is usually the cafeteria, where in front they have different groups and clubs showing what they do and what they have to offer the students. Right behind all the commotion there is the cafeteria, where sometimes it even gets a little rowdy.

In the cafeteria, they also have computers, which the students can utilize. Students can use the computers and eat their lunch simultaneously; this is a great way to help the students multitask. However, when it comes down to the food, their options are limited. Newly added to the cafeteria was the C Store, which is very similar at a mini 7-11.

This section was added to reduce the congestion inside the cafeteria. By doing a survey, one out of every five students in the cafeteria saw no significant change in the cafeteria other than the ridiculous prices. For example, a student named Keith McKinney pointed out, “Burritos, and six dollars when you can just get a two dollar burrito at Del Taco!” But on the other hand, one of the C Store’s cashiers, Juorone Smith stated that students don’t have to pay additional taxes on their purchases. This is one of the few up sides to the cafeteria.

Some students also pointed out that the noise in the cafeteria becomes overwhelming at times because the main seating area and the computer area are right across from one another. This creates conflicts between the people who want to study or finish up a quick homework assignment and the people who are trying to take a break and let loose. McKinney stated, “I think it’s awesome that people complain about the noise, but at the same time, it’s not a library.”

Due to the recent budget cuts, fewer jobs are offered in the cafeteria. The BBQ and salad bars have been taken out because as the prices go up, students are less likely to buy the overpriced food, leaving them with less business, as one of the cafe workers and student, Blanca Torres, pointed out. She also mentioned how they don’t receive much service in the back where the cafe is located. Whereas the C Store, located closer to student traffic, is more likely to get customers.

The cafeteria is like a multipurpose room, field with computers and food. It serves purposes such as giving the students somewhere to meet friends sit and talk do a bit of work. In comparison is sort of like the city college watering hole, were they also hold public city meetings that contributes to the growth of City College. By getting the college in the middle of some of the news that’s going on or issues that apply to the students. Other then the cuts of the food carts and the increase on some of the meals the cafeteria still holds a good amount of students coming and going supporting their college cafeteria.
