Colombian freelance photojournalist Pablo Serrano spoke to students in the Saville Theatre on March 15 about the human rights situation in his native country during a presentation put on by the City College World Cultures Program. During the event, Serrano also showed a variety of his photos taken in Colombia. “Over 60 percent of the Colombian population (lives in) poverty,” Serrano said. “Most of them are living in an urban environment.” He also accused the United States of providing Colombian police and military with more than $500 billion to continue the political and social insecurity in Colombia. According to Serrano, the Colombian people have much distrust towards each other and their elected officials. “There is a snitching type of program, which encourages Colombians to turn in their neighbors that are opposed to the Colombian government,” Serrano added.
