San Diego City College secures $200,000 to boost regional job training

San Diego City College has secured $200,000 in grants to supply students with two programs that will promote workforce readiness in high-demand job areas, according to a March 27 press release issued by San Diego Community College District spokesman Jack Beresford.

Accepted by the San Diego Community College District’s Board of Trustees at its March 26 meeting, the grants will maintain City College as a hub for regional job training in advanced manufacturing and professions requiring proficiency in computer skills.

$100,000 is going toward information and communication technology and digital media to prepare students for jobs as administration assistants, information clerks, secretaries and other office workers.

An additional $100,000 will be going toward City College’s Center for Applied Competitive Technologies, a program designed for technology education and manufacturing training.

According to the district’s press release, both are lucrative programs and target job areas that state and federal economists say will see sustained growth in the coming years.

City College recently arranged job suppliers to conduct on-campus interviews in February and March to fill more than 250 local positions, ranging from administrative assistants to manufacturing technicians. This provided ample opportunities for qualified students.

“Helping students prepare for jobs in an increasingly competitive labor market is a vital component of City College’s mission,” City College President Anthony Beebe commented in the press release. “This latest funding will enable us to continue programs that have proven successful.”

The funding is provided by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office through the Doing What Matters for Jobs and the Economy Program. The programs, will be funded through Dec. 31.
