City College’s Associated Student Government has officially endorsed state Proposition 55, the first and only political endorsement by the body for the 2016 election.

Proposition 55, officially known as, “The California Extension of the Proposition 30 Income Tax Increase Initiative,” would maintain a 1 – 3% tax increase on wealthy Californians passed by voters in 2012.

The endorsement effort was spearheaded by City College Inter-Club-Council president, Gregory Barba, who also works as an intern for the California Federation of Teachers.

Barba describes Prop 55 as a necessity to prevent a state-wide scramble for funding across California’s K-12 system, as well as the 72 community college districts throughout the state.

Since the endorsement of the proposition by ASG, informational fliers urging voters to approve the proposition have been circulated throughout City College.

Some major newspaper editorial boards including the San Francisco Chronicle and San Diego Union Tribune have come out against Prop 55, though an L.A. Times poll has placed support for the measure among California residents at 57% as of Sept. 30.

The fate of Prop 55, and 17 other state-wide initiatives will be decided by voters on election day this November.
