Days after San Diego City College men’s basketball sophomore Alex Crawford’s season ended in the Elite Eight of the 2024 California Community College Athletic Association state championship, he already had his sights set on the next level.
“I’m going to find the best place for me,” Crawford said. “(A place) that’s going to make me grow as a better player and what I feel is the best fit for me.”
It looks like he found that place.
The Fresno State University Bulldogs announced Monday that Crawford had signed on to play basketball for the NCAA Division I program, according to the university’s GoBullDogs.com website and Instagram.
“Next Chapter❤️💙#committed,“ Crawford confirmed his commitment to Fresno State with his Instagram post on Monday.
“Alex is a tremendous athlete who is only going to improve his game in our style of play,” Bulldog head coach Vance Walberg said in the GoBullDogs.com announcement. “His versatility is what we are most excited for because he has elite athleticism while also shooting 42% from 3 last year.”
“With us, I believe Alex’s game is going to expand exponentially,” Walberg said.
Crawford, who played one year at City College, was named to the California Community College Men’s Basketball Coaches Association 2024 All-State Team representing the southern region. He was also named to the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference First Team while contributing to the Knights conference championship.
Knights fans may get a chance to see Crawford play again in San Diego as a Bulldog. Fresno State is a member of the Mountain West Conference and plays San Diego State University at Viejas Arena on the SDSU campus.
Crawford is the first signee for new Bulldog head coach Vance Walberg. Walberg was announced as the Fresno State head coach on April 6 after the school parted ways with six-year head coach Justin Hutson.
“I’m excited to have him as my first signee,” Walberg said. “He’s a tremendous young man and one the Red Wave will really like.”
