San Diego City College’s Student Health Center will be hosting its annual Suicide Prevention Fair on Monday, Sept. 23.
The event takes place at the A Building Patio from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is open to all students and staff.
Diana Hernandez, a clinical therapist for the Student Health Center, said that the event aims to bring in over 20 local organizations to interact with students with a specific goal in mind.
“They’re really focused on suicide prevention,” Hernandez said. “What that entails is reducing some stigma around suicide, as well as providing students with tools, techniques and resources to best support those in their life that might be experiencing thoughts of not wanting to be here.”
Activities such as painting and spending time with support animals will be available at the event, according to Hernandez, with food available exclusively for the first 150 students.
The event taking place in September holds its own significance as it is Suicide Prevention Month. The National Alliance on Mental Illness describes this month as a time to shift perception and spread hope so those who need help have access to it.
Among the organizations scheduled to be on hand for the fair is Timely Care, which provides 24/7 support for the mental and physical health of students.
“We’re excited to have them come over,” Hernandez said. “San Diego Youth Services is also coming to talk a little bit about suicide prevention within youth as well as young adults.”
For those unable to attend the event, Hernandez said that students can use the Timely Care app which has a section dedicated to self care and well-being.
