When you look at the final scores for the San Diego City College men’s basketball conference season so far, you see the Knights scoring in the high 90s and 80s, even 112.
However, one score sticks out like a sore thumb … or maybe a sore shooting wrist.
The result of 58-54, the score when City traveled to Miramar College and squeaked past the Jets on Jan. 17.
The Knights (12-1, 21-4 overall) may hope for a much better shooting night Friday at 6 p.m. when Miramar (10-3, 15-10) comes to Harry West Gymnasium for the season rematch.
In that initial meeting, City College shot 38% on 20-of-52 from the field and 13% from behind the 3-point arc, well below their 49.1% and 34% overall season rates, respectively.
One thing the Knights may be hoping to repeat from that earlier game will be forcing turnovers and stealing the ball. Miramar committed 17 turnovers to City’s eight. The Knights also average 11 steals per game to the Jets’ three.
City College comes into the game tied for first place with MiraCosta College in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference. The conference regular-season championship could be on the line when the two teams meet for the season-ending game on Feb. 23 at Harry West Gym.
Miramar is currently in second place.
The Knights have won five straight games and are back in action after a week of rest following their 93-70 win on Feb. 9 at Imperial Valley.
The Jets are on a two-game winning streak and are coming off a 94-69 victory versus Imperial Valley this past Wednesday.
Miramar’s 6-foot-4 freshman guard Charlie Gehler leads his team, averaging 17.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Guards Markees Williams and Mike Batchelor both average 11 points per game.
The Knights’ offense continues its efficient ways, shooting 49.1% from the field, 34% behind the arc and 76% from the free-throw line. Miramar shoots 44% from the field, 38% from behind the 3-point line and 65% from the line.
Knights forward Alex Crawford, coming off his recognition Feb. 7 as PCAC Athlete of the Week, averages 15 points and seven rebounds a game. Teammate KJay Bradley leads City in scoring, averaging 16 points per game and adding six assists and three steals per game.
City College ranked No. 7 in the Feb. 13 California Community College men’s basketball coaches poll. Fellow PCAC team MiraCosta is No. 26 in the poll.
The game will be streamed live without commentary on the Knights YouTube channel. Full play-by-play and color commentary of the game will be available the next day on the SDCityTimes YouTube channel. Live statistics will also be available on the Knights’ website.
