The San Diego City College men’s basketball team won decisively over San Diego Mesa College at Harry West Gym in the Knights’ last game of 2024.

The game between Pacific Athletic Coast Conference opponents was close early, but a 17-0 run turned a 16-15 Knights lead into an insurmountable lead City never gave up.

Cam Marshall came off the bench to score 20 first-half points, which included four three-pointers. He finished with 22 points.

Although his role has fluctuated throughout the season, he said he has stayed level-headed and ready when called upon by Coach Mitch Charlens.

“Working with Coach D (Darrien Mcclain), one of our assistants, has been big for me,” Marshall said after the game. “We’re always in the gym. Today we got in a couple of hours early. We really got to work during that, too. So just always being ready.”

Led by Marshall, the Knights’ bench outscored Mesa’s bench, 43-22.

Marley Gonzalez was the only other Knight in double figures, adding a 13-point, 8-rebound effort.

The Knights’ stifling defense forced 16 Mesa turnovers, which led to 19 points for the Knights.

Ball movement was also a key for the Knights, leading to 17 assists, compared to Mesa’s seven.

“Every day in practice, we put an emphasis on moving the ball around, and we’re getting better every single day,” Marshall said. “We’re not where we want to be yet, but I think we can obviously tell from the first game (to) now we’re much more of a team.”

The Knights have now won three in a row, with two coming against PCAC conference opponents.

They continue their PCAC schedule against Imperial Valley College on Jan. 4 at 5 p.m. at Harry West Gym.
