Students who are in financial need have the opportunity to apply for scholarships on the City College website, but the deadline is Monday, Feb 24.
There are scholarships available that no one has applied for, according to Acting Scholarship Coordinator Edwidge Dupard. If there are no qualified applicants, the money is transferred to the next scholarship cycle.
Dupard emphasized that all students are deserving of scholarships and highlighted the importance of applying for multiple scholarships.
“The San Diego City College website San Diego City College has over fifty applications for various scholarship opportunities that City College has to offer its students,” Dupard said.
Some Scholarships are specific to majors and demographics and encourage students to visit the scholarship page on the college’s website.
Dupard also mentioned there are specific scholarships available for military and veteran students, those facing housing insecurities, and many more.
City College uses a software called Academic Works, which matches students with appropriate scholarships. Once students have completed their general application, the software will recommend opportunities based on their qualifications. Dupard emphasized that students should apply for more than one.
“Everybody’s deserving of a scholarship,” Dupard said. “A lot of students shy away from applying because they feel like they’re not the perfect student, or they don’t have the highest GPA. Some of these scholarships here have no GPA requirement. Some scholarships have five-unit requirements. Some scholarships are looking for students who have challenging times.”
If students miss the deadline, there are outside scholarship opportunities available through the City College website, according to DuPard. Applications for the AFT Guild union member scholarship application and the Common Scholarship Application are both due in March.
The English center has tutoring available to help write the essay portions of these scholarship applications.
“We tutor all the reading, writing, and critical thinking on campus for all students in all classes across the curriculum. that’s both online and on campus.,” said English Center Coordinator and Professor of English Chris Brown.
Dupard said that the Scholarship Department is trying to extend the deadline, but it’s not guaranteed. Students should take advantage of these opportunities before they expire.
