BREAKING: Arson suspected in City College AH bathroom fire

Building temporarily evacuated; no injuries reported

A fire started in a women’s third-floor bathroom stall of the Arts and Humanities building at San Diego City College on Tuesday night.

AH Dean Andy MacNeill and multiple SDCCD officers confirmed the details.

“Looks like arson in one of the restrooms on the third floor,” said Vice President of Administrative Services John Parker. “It was enough to smoke out the floor and cause minor damage to one of the stalls.

“Because it is a crime, it is arson, it will be investigated and treated as such.”

Parker confirmed there were no suspects.

A fire alarm first went off around 6:20 p.m., according to MacNeill. The City of San Diego Fire Department responded with an engine at 6:32 p.m., followed by a truck at 6:41 p.m.

“We got called for reports of smoke in this building here and on arrival, found a small fire in the women’s restroom on the (third) floor here,” said Engine 11 Captain Tanner Bixler. “Appeared police officers on scene prior to our arrival had attempted extinguishing. Fire was mostly out so we just conducted a full extinguishment of the fire.”

Approximately 50 students, faculty and staff gathered in the BT quad and around the lower levels of the building.

At 6:51 p.m., the east side of the building was reopened. The west side remained closed to air the area out and investigate, Bixler said. That was expected to take another 20-30 minutes.

Students in a sculpture class on the west side of the building were allowed to retrieve their belongings but were sent home.

No injuries were reported.
