San Diego City College’s Student Health Center is hosting a Suicide Prevention Fair on Monday, Sept. 18.
The event, open to all students and staff, will take place from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on the A Building Patio, according to an event graphic posted by City College Mental Health.
“Suicide is prevalent, but preventable,” said Abby Weisman, a mental health counselor involved with outreach at the Student Health Center. “It takes these direct conversations and connections to resources to prevent (it). Our goal is to get the campus a little more informed, hand out resources and kind of make (the event) fun.”
According to Weisman, the fair will provide catering, therapy animals, and information on life-affirming health services on campus and around San Diego.
September is National Suicide Prevention Month. It is a time to remember those impacted by suicide, raise awareness about suicide prevention and create hope, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
“You may be experiencing or have experienced suicidal thoughts, but even if you haven’t, you probably know someone who has and so this information is really relevant to everyone,” Weisman said.
Students who aren’t able to attend may stop by the Student Health Center and inquire about educational materials left over by community partners, Weisman added.
