In honor of veteran’s month, San Diego City College is offering a variety of events to support military-affiliated students in their academic pursuits.
The list, shared in an email to faculty and staff and on posters around campus, is designed to offer resources to veteran students that may benefit from additional support in accessing resources.
CalVet presents: Veterans resume workshop and interview tips – Nov. 1
The California Department of Veterans Affairs will send a representative to help veterans learn to translate experience they’ve acquired in the military into civilian terms that they can write in a resume.
Located in M-101 from noon to 1:00 p.m.
Veteran transfer application workshop – Fall 2024 transfer – Nov. 1
A general workshop held at the career and transfer center will help the veteran population with transfer applications to any school.
Located in A-301 from 1-2:30 p.m.
SDCCD veteran’s transfer presentation by UCSD – Nov. 2
Admission representatives will be on campus to talk with veteran students interested in transferring to UCSD.
Located in M-101 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Free food distribution – Nov. 7
The Basic Needs Center will be offering free food in parking lot 8 from 12:30-1:30 p.m., or until supplies last. Free food is available to all students.
Priority enrollment event – Nov. 8
Veteran students will receive help registering for next semester and getting their sign-off done to ensure that they are registered for and taking classes that are required and payable by Veteran Affairs.
This allows veteran students to receive financial assistance from the VA including tuition support and housing allowance.

Self-compassion workshop – Nov. 8
This self-compassion workshop is being hosted by City College Student Health.
The offering comes as a 2022 report by the U.S. Department of Federal Affairs showed that suicide is the second leading cause of death in veterans under age 45.
“There’s a big spike right now in veteran suicides,” said student services technician Alyssa Antonio. “A lot of that has to do with the stress that comes with (transitioning from military to civilian life).
“We’re really hoping that by student health offering these types of workshops, that veterans know that they have more than just (veterans services). They have the whole campus to help, resource-wise,” Antonio said.
This event will take place in A-180 from 11:30-12:30 p.m.
Veterans month celebration – Nov. 9
Retired Air Force veteran and DSPS Coordinator Darren Walters and Andrei Lucas, dean of Continuing Education, will attend as speakers alongside featured students.
The event will feature an open house at the veteran service center and will be followed by a barbecue.
Located in M-101 from 1:30-2:30 p.m.
SDSU application workshop drop-in hours – Nov. 9 and Nov.14
SDSU transfer admissions counselors will be available to assist interested students with application and transfer questions.
One-on-one support will be available via drop-in hours and will be located in A-301.
The workshop will take place on Thursday, Nov. 9 from 1:30-4 p.m. and Tuesday, Nov. 14 from 2-4:30 p.m.
Scholarship workshop for veterans – Nov. 14
A scholarship coordinator from financial aid will be educating veterans on scholarships available to them.
According to Antonio, many veterans don’t know they can use financial aid in addition to their GI Bill benefits. This workshop will help veterans learn how they can access additional financial support.
