City College scholarship applications are due Feb. 25. Here’s what you need to know.

Over 50 scholarships are available to students this spring semester

The deadline for San Diego City College’s scholarship season is fast approaching – the last day to apply is Feb. 25.

Merry Matti, financial aid specialist at City, said students can receive numerous benefits from applying for scholarships.

“Scholarships offset a lot of different expenses (such as), tuition, books, (and) housing,” she said.

Students also have the freedom to use the money awarded as they choose.

“The neat part of our internal scholarship cycle is that students receive a check at the ceremony,” Matti said. “So essentially, (students) can use (the money) on any kind of expense that they need to supplement. It doesn’t have stipulations where they need to turn in receipts.”

There are over 50 scholarships available, and students can apply for more than one scholarship, Matti said.

New scholarships are also up for grabs this year, such as the Werfen and the Deborah Helm Scholarships.

With the deadline right around the corner, Matti is urging students to go onto the academic works website and apply.

To get started with the application process, students need to create an account on the Academic Works website. Students first have to complete the general application.

After completing the general application, students can then apply for each individual scholarship. Scholarship requirements vary from each other and may have minimum GPA and letters of recommendation requirements.

Matti shared that students in need of support during the application process are welcome to walk into the financial aid office or call to make an appointment. The office is located in A-270.

For students in need of support with writing their supplemental questions, they can visit the Learning Resource Center in the R building. The English Center in L-209 can also provide support, both in person and online.

Applicants who receive a scholarship will be notified by email. Awards will be given out at the Scholarship Awards Ceremony later this semester. Recipients must attend the ceremony for the release of funds.
