The San Diego City College Music Program ended the fall semester with the SOUNDstation City College Student Music Festival showcasing ten different student performances at Curran Plaza May 22.
Students not enrolled in the music program, such as third-semester student Kian Ramani, were able to participate in the festival.
Ramani played keyboard for the group “Jazzy Jams” and expressed his appreciation for City’s inclusive festival policy.
“I’m currently a math and computer science major,” Ramani said. “I just love music. I love the program here, it’s a great community.”
The festival was sponsored by the San Diego City College Music Club, SD Knight Records and the Music@City program.
Performances ranged in genres from hip hop and spoken word to jam band rock, as well as punk and emo rock.
City College Music Club President Autumn Shaeffer said she was pleased with the outcome and variety of the performances.
“We got to represent so many different seasoned artists with different genres,” Shaeffer said. “It was really amazing and beautiful.”
Shaeffer, at the helm of her last City College music club, was nostalgic and appreciative when reflecting on her time in the program.
“This gave me the opportunity to explore other career fields in music like marketing, audio engineering and a live setup like this,” she said. “The way that we were able to encapsulate all of it in just one event is amazing.”
Shaeffer ends her time at City with a commercial music associate degree and will be working for Live Nation as a paid marketing intern.
This was the fourth annual City College Student Music Festival and students like Ramani look forward to this for years to come.
“I just really hope these things can keep happening, especially with funding and budget cuts,” Ramani said. “I hope this stuff still prevails because it brings so many people together.”
