The third annual Abriendo las Puertas Hiring Panel will be held by members of San Diego City College on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 5 p.m. in R-114 and R-115.

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Abriendo las Puertas event is an opportunity to learn more about the hiring process, prepare for job interviews and connect with other members of the community, according to Marco Anzures, who is coordinating the event this year.

“This is the third year we’ve been doing it,” Anzures said. “(City President) Ricky Shabazz wanted to be able to provide employees on campus an opportunity to learn from other full-time employees.”

This year, the panel features multiple staff members from City, including Mike Lopez, physics and astronomy professor, and Claudia Sanchez, administrative assistant.

In past events, the panelists connected with participants by sharing their own experiences and advice about the process of being hired.

Anzures found that students asking their own questions to the panelists is crucial.

“(Those) are usually the most helpful,” Anzures said, “because they can have a little bit more of a dialogue with them.”

Attendees will have the opportunity to converse with one another and the panelists after the event concludes.

Members across the San Diego Community College District are also welcome to attend.

“The experiences people are going to talk about are going to be common across any institution,” Anzures said.

Ismael Carrillo, an Extended Opportunity Programs and Services counselor, who is also co-coordinating the event, gained insight into planning as a former panelist.

”It was hosted for the folks that are interested in getting into the community college system by navigating the interview process,” Carrillo said.

Carrillo emphasizes that the hiring panel seeks to bring together not only the Chicane/Latine community, but other communities as well to create an all-inclusive group.

“This is what hope could look like,” Carillo said. “I see people sharing spaces of joy, resilience, counter-narratives, counter-experiences and this is a great way to showcase that.”If you are interested in this event, RSVP is encouraged to attend the panel.
