San Diego City College’s fine arts students banded together to create “Resistance In Motion,” the first exhibition at City Gallery this fall semester.
The exhibition draws focus to a plethora of cultural movements spanning over multiple decades. It also revisits historical protests that have occurred not only in San Diego but all over the nation.
Cindy Zimmerman’s “Mobile Monument” is a featured piece that highlights the changing of vocabulary under the Trump administration. The artwork is covered with 300 different words and phrases that were removed.
“They’ve pulled these words off of websites and tried to make people take them out of their documents,” Zimmerman said. “And we’re not going to let it happen, cause these are our words, and they matter.”
Other works reflect on past and current events, ranging from the AIDS crisis in the 1980s to the 2020 La Mesa protests against police brutality.
The exhibit runs through October 23. The gallery is located in AH-314 and is open Tuesday-Thursday from noon to 4 p.m.
