San Diego City College Associated Student Government President Celina Martinez hasn’t wasted any time advocating on students’ behalf, a campaign promise she made earlier this year to ensure student voices were heard.

The newly elected ASG president will participate in a forum with City College President Ricky Shabazz for students to attend and ask questions of their leaders.

The ASG-hosted event will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at noon in the cafeteria.

“The President’s Forum with Ricky Shabazz and I will mainly be about addressing questions from students and (will) provide key updates regarding San Diego City College,” Martinez said in an email to City Times.

Students in attendance will be eligible for prizes and are encouraged to scan a QR on the event’s flyer to submit questions to the City College leaders.

In addition to holding regular ASG meetings, Martinez participates in the United Students Council and the regular Board of Trustees meetings of the San Diego Community College District in a rotating student trustee role, representing City College at both.

“I’ve been promoting some great events that City College has been doing, such as the career fairs, the club rushes and the retreats to let our district know all of the good things that are happening here,” Martinez said.

In a recent Academic Senate meeting at City College, Martinez inquired about student involvement in the senate’s resolution process. Senate President Mona Alsoraimi-Espiritu responded with encouragement at the potential.

“(Students) can definitely write resolutions,” Alsoraimi-Espiritu said. “They do need faculty to sponsor their resolution to bring it here, but yes, absolutely. In fact, we should be getting student feedback for resolutions.”

City students interested in more information regarding the Academic Senate at City College can attend meetings every other Monday from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in MS-140.

Students can also attend the ASG open meetings on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. in room M-201. Public comments are welcome and can be made by filling out an agenda request form.
