The San Diego City College Music Club hosted the first open mic night of the spring semester Wednesday, March 12 at room C-208. Music flowed from the studio as artists of all levels performed everything from speeches to poetry, rap and singing.
Robert Gomez, the director of the music club, organizes these events to give students a break from the stresses that come with college life. His goal is to give anyone, especially those who aren’t directly involved in music, a chance to participate.
“The main thing is you don’t need to know how to play music or perform it to be part of Music Club,” Gomez said. “Actually knowing how to play music is just a plus.”
City College student Seth Cauble performed “Paradise” by Coldplay and “Free Fallin’” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers with his band during the open mic. He believes that if you ever find a chance to perform in life and you want to do it, then you should.

Zussethe Cruz, a student music tech, performed “Jigsaw“ by Radiohead and said that the performance reflected her mood.
“I feel very, very good about it,” Zussethe said. “I feel very safe and welcome and I’m able to be vulnerable in that moment to express my art, which is my voice.”
These performances reinforced Robert Gomez’s desire to continue hosting these open mics. He hopes to organize at least one or possibly two more before the end of the spring semester.
The music club meets every Friday, from noon to 1 p.m. and then concludes with a jam session right after each meeting. Anyone who can play that wants to play are always free to join.
