Las Guaracheras, a women-led band, shared their message of resilience and empowerment through Afro-Caribbean rhythms that brought life to City College students on Tuesday, Mar. 18 at Curran Plaza.
Invited by the San Diego City’s music department, the performance was part of Women’s History Month.
Giba Botia, the band’s Timbal player, noted how hard it was to achieve their dreams in a male-dominated industry in Colombia, with the phrase, “Las mujeres son poderosas,” which means women are powerful.
The band’s energy created from the performance inspired many in the City College community to get up and dance throughout the show.
Nayelli Casian and Bear Rodrigez, students from City hip-hop class, danced salsa in the crowd.
Casian was inspired by their performance which gave her the courage to step out of her comfort zone.
“Their energy was so feminine and it was rubbing off on me,” Casian said. “That’s why I was so brave to go up and dance in front of everybody.”
Rodrigez saw that the bandmates were attuned and connected with one another through their shared experiences.
“It’s just like one wave and every song they play, they love,” Rodriguez said.
