Gerald “Larry” Quick, 62, is to be arraigned Feb. 16 on two felony and two misdemeanor charges related to the theft. His bail is set at $25,000. He is a 30+ year employee of the San Diego Community College District.

Campus Police Lt. Louis Zizzo said that Quick confessed to the burglary and theft.

“Since then his keys have been confiscated and his alarm codes deactivated,” he said, adding that Quick’s employment has been suspended while he awaits trial.

The four Canon C100 cameras were stolen over the winter break. The campus police department searched local pawn shops and found the four cameras for sale at two shops in downtown San Diego, Zizzo said.

Two of the cameras have been recovered and returned to City College while the other two are to be released to the school within a week.

The student response was positive.

“I am astonished we got them back. I wasn’t sure how the film classes would survive without them,” said Matt Knowles, who studies motion picture production.

Cy Kuckenbaker, cinema professor for Documentary and Film Production, said the C100s are extremely versatile. They are used in multiple classes, such as documentary, motion picture production, and for the “Newscene” newscast.

Laura Castaneda, head of the Communications Department, is pleased with the outcome.

“We really want to commend the campus police department for their diligent investigation and returning the cameras to us,” she said.

In regards to security, Castaneda said, “We intend to ask the President, Beebe, for increased police presence in the C and L Buildings because many faculty and staff fear retaliation and sabotage,” when Quick is released.
