City Times, Legend won statewide awards

BURBANK — City Times and Legend Magazine won seven statewide awards from the Journalism Association of Community Colleges, including Newspaper General Excellence honors.

In addition, three City College students won on-the-spot competitions at the organization’s state convention held March 17 to 19 at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel.

The awards covered journalism work done in 2015 by community college students. City Times won two additional awards: Lauren J. Mapp won fourth place for a critical review, and Mike Madriaga won honorable mention for a profile feature story.

Legend Magazine won four awards: Joe Kendall won third place for a profile, Mark Elliot won third place for a news feature, fourth place for design/layout, and Angelica Wallingford and Joe Kendall won fourth place for cover design.

Journalism students from all over California participated in numerous workshops, tours, panel discussins and on-the-spot competitions during the state convention.

Two curent Legend Magazine staff mebers won honors in those competitions: Alan Hickey took honorable mention for sports photo and Griffin Dehne took fourth place for feature photo. City Times Editor-in-Chief Celia Jimenez took third place for a news photo.
