Three unsheltered men killed earlier this week in a car crash near San Diego City College have been identified.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office, both in a press release and through media reports, identified the deceased victims as Rodney Diffendal, 40, Randy Ferris, 65, and Walter Jones, 61.
The family of Diffendal family has been notified. Local authorities are still searching for the other families.
The three men were killed when the 71-year-old driver jumped a curb and plowed onto a sidewalk under the bridge on the 1400 block of B Street.
Six other people, whose identities have not been released, were treated for injuries.
San Diego City College President Ricky Shabazz said in an email the homeless community is very much a part of the campus.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected,” he wrote.
Local advocates urged San Diego leaders to address the issue of homelessness and move forward with helping those living on the streets.
“This is just one tragic event of many that have happened,” said Michael McConnell, a local advocate from HomelessnessSD, in a mid-week press conference. “Will this be the catalyst that actually finally wakes up our elected officials and moves us forward? We are waiting to see that.”
Todd Gloria said he plans to make sure the city helps people get off the streets.
“We need to make sure that when it comes to homelessness, that we have real solutions that are data-driven, accountable and ultimately get more people off the streets,” Gloria said.
Today was traumatic for the victims of this morning’s crash near City College, which is why we’ve sent chaplains, social services and mental health clinicians to the scene. The people there prior to and not injured are being allowed back in to retrieve their belongings. (1/3)
