Vice President of Student Affairs Denise Whisenhunt was ecstatic to get a call from Grossmont College revealing that she was appointed to be the new president.

Whisenhunt will start her new role July 1, pending contract approval by the Governing Board. She has served as San Diego City College’s vice president of student affairs since 2013.

“I was thrilled and so excited about the opportunity,” Whisenhunt said. “I have been on cloud nine ever since.”

This role is not unfamiliar to Whisenhunt, who served as interim president of City College until current President Ricky Shabazz was selected.

“I knew it was only a matter of time,” Shabazz said. “Denise is one of the best people I ever worked with in my career.”

She holds a B.A. in political science from the UC San Diego and J.D. from the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America, according to City College’s website.

“City is an amazing place,” Whisenhunt said. “The thing I learned most about this experience is that it’s not just a journey for the students, but it is a journey for the staff and faculty.”
