Women’s volleyball starts PCAC season

Defending PCAC South champs bring home a win in conference opener.

The women’s volleyball team started its Pacific Coast Athletic Conference season on Oct. 3 as defending PCAC South champions, winning in five games against Imperial Valley College.

DeeAnn Schaal had 19 kills. Kareemah Hopkins had 56 assists.

Freshman Alina Fletes continues to lead the state with her defensive skills. She is tops in digs per set (6.9) and No. 2 in overall digs (400) through Oct. 12.

She was also named one of the San Diego Hall of Champions Stars of the Month for September.

“I believe she is the best libero in the California community colleges right now and we will continue to see,” head coach Dede Bodnar wrote in an email. “She is a leader on the court just by her ability to know and play the game.”

Men’s soccer

Gustavo Velasquez scored two goals for the men’s soccer team, helping the Knights secure a 4-1 win against Imperial Valley College on Oct. 5.

Velasquez continues to lead the team in goals. Andres Estrada had three assists.

The first half ended scoreless despite the Knights outshooting Imperial Valley. By the end of the game, the Knights outshot IVC, 26-4.

The Knights have won two of their last three games, and improve to 5-3-2 overall and 3-2-2 in the PCAC. The next game for the Knights will be on Oct. 12 at home against Mesa College at 3 p.m.

Women’s soccer

After a loss on Oct. 2, the Knights earned a 3-2 win over Palomar on Oct. 5.

Kenya Zamora scored the game-winning goal. Goalkeeper Andrea Kumano had 7 saves.

Men’s cross country

The Knights finished fourth overall during the Brubaker Invitational on Oct. 5.

Edwin Mejia finished 13th, and Andres Zamudio finished 19th overall.

The next meet for both the men’s and women’s cross country teams will be on Oct. 12 against Imperial Valley at Morley Field.
