The San Diego City College athletic department celebrated Stress Awareness Month on Thursday, March 20 when the Knights’ baseball team took on Grossmont College (15-6, 7-2 PCAC) at Morley Field.
The cloudless sky provided a beautiful backdrop for pre-game festivities for the crowd of close to 200. Baseball jerseys, a spread of Caesar salads and hot dogs, along with mental health resources from City’s mental health department were all available to attendees.
The festivities continued with a first pitch and a brief speech from City College President Ricky Shabazz.
He thanked Athletic Director and Dean Aaron Detty for his contributions at City before honoring Knights’ head coach Chris Brown for reaching 400 career wins.
Brown achieved that milestone last season on April 27 against Victor Valley.
Now, in his 26th year at the helm for City, Brown said that he had no idea he reached that milestone.
“I couldn’t have been more surprised. It was just a special treat,” Brown said.

Brown currently stands at 407 career wins for the Knights, but he couldn’t add to that number on Thursday.
The Knights (6-15, 1-9 PCAC) were blown out 15-3 by Grossmont. City committed six errors, leading to seven unearned runs.
City has now lost seven games in a row.
Brown spoke afterward about trying to keep his team in a positive mindset amidst the losing streak with 15 games remaining in the season.
“It’s tough. We’re just expressing a few key, simple things to continue to play the game with passion, stay focused on what we need to do as a team and stay together,” Brown said.

Despite the result, it was still a celebratory day for City College athletics.
“It was amazing,” said Detty. “A big thanks to our executive team, our students, alumni and fans for coming out here. It was a huge success when it comes to honoring our president, honoring Coach Brown with 400 wins, really featuring Knights athletics.”
The Knights will be back in action at Morley Field on Thursday, March 27 at 2 p.m. against Southwestern College.
