The San Diego City College baseball team lost a tough game, 7-2, against Mesa College at Morley Field on Thursday, April 10.
The game was close early. Down 2-0 in the fourth inning, Knights’ shortstop Brody McAuliffe singled towards left-center field, allowing Cameron Breeze to score City’s first run of the game. That cut the Knights’ deficit in half, as City entered the fifth inning trailing just 2-1.
The game quickly went south for the Knights in the fifth when Mesa shortstop Tobin Orzel bunted for a single with the bases loaded, making the score 3-1 with the bases still loaded. This led the Knights to make a pitch change, and starter Dusty Burns exited.
Unfortunately for City fans, Mesa’s next batter, Nick Cook, hit a grand slam, ballooning Mesa’s lead to 7-1.
“In the game of baseball, the ball met the bat just right. And so that’s a second hit. ” City baseball head coach Chris Brown said. “Unfortunately, it was in a key situation.”

In the seventh inning, Knights’ catcher Tanner Lee grounded out to shortstop, scoring McAuliffe for City’s second and final run of the game.
When asked about how the rest of the season will look for the team, Brown replied, “Just playing solid baseball. Stringing together nine innings of solid pitching, defense and hitting.”
The Knights turned it around on Saturday, April 10, winning 5-4 against Mesa.
City will be back in action on Tuesday, April 15, at Morley Field at 2 p.m.
