The City College Transfer Center invited students to meet with over 40 university representatives for the Fall Transfer Fair, Oct. 17.

Recruitment tables lined the A-building terrace as music played, food was provided and raffles were held. A steady flow of students filled and circulated throughout the entire three-hour event.

City Times Media took the initiative to gather essential insights from 15 school representatives for students who were unable to engage with the visiting universities.

Each of those university admissions representatives provided a brief overview of their respective programs.

What students should know, according to Sebastian Brown:

“A lot of folks are surprised that we have some really easy requirements. So we are looking for English composition, college-level math, one year of a foreign language and a 2.5 GPA to transfer to Oregon. Anything outside of that is a conversation about the credits you are bringing in and what you want to major in. But if you’re hitting those four requirements you’re considered an admissible transfer student.

“I like to call us a big, small school. We’re about 19,000 undergraduate students. So football game day, clubs and organizations, we bring that big school energy. We also brought in over 800 transfer students this year, so we’re very transfer-friendly. But in the classroom, you’re going to get that smaller school feel. Student-faculty ratio, about 19 to one. We also (have) 278 academic programs that we offer to students, so there’s a lot of ways that they can mix and match and really personalize their education.”

What students should know, according to according to Dereice Dawson:

“One of my favorite things is actually the diversity, not just within the student population, but within the faculty and staff – a lot of black and brown faculty and staff members. So as an admissions recruiter, I like to let people know that they have an opportunity to learn from somebody that looks like themselves. It’s just one of the things that I pride myself on as far as emphasis at State goes.

“Right now our current popular programs definitely would be nursing and social work, which (are) our two most impacted programs. But we also have popular programs like kinesiology, psychology, all sorts of things. So honestly, we have a little bit of everything for everybody.”

“We do also look into other aspects of the students (when applying). So not only the courses and academics, but also their life outside those courses. So your personal insight, questions, involvement, as well as any additional comments that students want to share with us so that we’re not left with any question marks or gaps in the application when we’re reviewing it.”

So really, students are getting that well-rounded experience at the university to be able to make those changes in their civic run.”

What students should know, according to Emmett Ingram:

“The program I work with is for non-traditional students. So we’re looking for applicants who have had at least a one-year break in education. So we tend to work with students who are a little bit older, but they’re still coming in and doing the same undergraduate bachelor’s degree as the rest of Columbia’s undergrad programs. (General Studies) has existed since 1947. Originally, it was a way for World War II veterans to come back and receive a college degree. We still work with a lot of veterans, that’s a big population for us, but it’s not the majority. We serve any students who have had time away for whatever reason.”
