Writing center prepares City College students for finals

Peer tutors help students brainstorm, organize and refine end-of-semester assignments

The San Diego City College Writing Center serves as a critical lifeline for students during finals week, as they navigate high-stakes deadlines with its support, and demand for guidance peaks during this stressful time.

English professor and director Chris Barron underscored the urgent need, emphasizing helping students manage overwhelming tasks. His message is clear: “Find help. We are here for you.”

The center provides actionable guidance at any writing stage, with tutors to assist with brainstorming and final revisions.

“A key service is deconstructing complex assignment prompts as tutors help create outlines and develop strong thesis statements,” Barron said. “This turns daunting projects into manageable steps.”

Barron also shared that helping students through this process are tutors who are students themselves.

“They understand the specific curriculum and time pressures,” Barron said. “This creates a collaborative, judgment-free learning environment. The support is especially key for students whose first language is not English.”

English as a Second Language (ESL) student, Summer Hu, remarked how this type of support builds confidence in students like her.

“For English as a Second Language (ESL) students, specialized support builds foundational confidence,” said Summer Hu, a student at City College. “Patient guidance on grammar and structure reduces anxiety. This tailored approach fosters academic independence,” Hu said.

Hu also stated that tutoring changed her approach to writing.

“The tutors’ patience helped me build confidence in my writing. I learned a clearer, more structured process that reduced my anxiety,” she said.

Sociology student Daniel Lopez directly credits the center’s help.

“The tutor’s guidance on structure and editing was instrumental. This support sharpened his own critical analysis before the deadline,” Lopez said.

Barron stresses the goal is to build lasting skills, not dependency, with the philosophy being to foster student independence.

“This empowers learners for all future coursework,” he said.

The Writing Center is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., located at the Learning Resource Center in room L-117.

Students can walk in or schedule an appointment for in-person or online tutoring sessions.

To get help, students are encouraged to bring their assignment prompt and any writing they have started.
