San Diego City College student Michael Clayborn Jr., an undeclared major, finds laptops to be resourceful not just for schoolwork but also to relax with entertainment, gaming and the internet.
“It’s nice to have something to entertain yourself with, like a laptop,” Clayborn said. “Whether you buy your own games or you go online, a laptop has a lot of uses, and ways for you to entertain yourself besides doing work.”
Students can also check out graphing calculators, headphones, phone chargers, webcams and whiteboard marker kits while in the library, according to the City College Library page.
Rather than staying in one spot to access a computer, Clayton’s laptop has allowed for flexibility in where he decides to work and relax.
“A laptop is very portable for me, so I could take it wherever I need to,” Clayborn said. “If I want to go to the library and I just relax for a bit, do my work, it’s very convenient for me to have, because I can’t bring a whole PC or computer with me to the library.”
Marco Anzures, the professional learning coordinator at City, encourages students who are in need of a device to apply for the loan.
“I think having a desktop computer is probably not what most people have, and so having a device that you can use anywhere is pretty important,” Anzures said.
The laptop loaner program has been an active solution for students since the pandemic, he added.
To qualify for the laptop loaner program, students must be currently enrolled in at least three units or more at City College, according to the City College Library page.
Students can apply uing a form provided by the City College library. After an application is submitted, students will be provided an email when their laptop is available to be picked up.
Any loss, theft or damage to the laptop must be reported to library faculty immediately, otherwise students can be disqualified, according to the program’s detail page.
More information on the laptop loan guidelines will be provided through the email given to applicants.
“It’s strongly encouraged to, if you need a laptop, check out a laptop,” Anzures said.
