Students contribute to Food Pantry

Sometimes we want to contribute to the well being of our community but don’t know where or how to start. Professor Kathy McGinnis has found a way to help do that at San Diego City College.

McGinnis motivated her students to contribute to the campus food pantry on Oct. 28 and 29. Students were excited to contribute to the food pantry and were able to raise more than 650 pounds of goods among the five classes McGinnis teaches.

The students brought products such as canned food, bottled water, soups, cookies and other things to their classroom in BT-306, where McGinnis teaches all her classes. Inside the room, she has a scale that she used to weigh all the goods her students brought to class.

The class that contributed the most was Introduction to Kinesiology, they brought about a third of the total of raised food despite being a smaller class with about 20 students.

“I think the cause Ms. McGinnis is doing is definitely a good opportunity to expand as human beings and learn how to give others,” student Alexis Rangel said. He also added this was a great opportunity for students to share with others in need .

McGinnis said that “students can’t learn if they’re hungry,” and that’s why she become closely involved with City College’s food pantry. She added that the food pantry has become a great food resource for many students who don’t eat before coming to class because they either forgot or cannot afford it.

McGinnis previously worked as City College’s athletics director and this is a concept she has carried on from her time in that role. Previously, she explained, it was a way to help students in need and show the athletes presence on campus.

Now, as a faculty teacher she decided to bring this project back to life and instated it in all of her classes. “I’m going to keep on going,” she said.
