The San Diego City College women’s soccer team (2-2) match against Imperial Valley concluded with a 2-0 win for the Knights on Friday, Sept. 19.

The match took a turn early in the game. Six minutes in, Christiana Macias assisted Juliette Salgado Garcia, which led to the first goal of the night.

Both teams continued to attack in attempts to score until the 20th minute, when Juliette Salgado Garcia saw the opportunity and assisted Maya Beltran, creating a 2-0 lead to end the first half of the game.

When asked if there was pressure going into the second half of the match, captains Maya Romero, Isabelle Schachner, and Abril Mejia Ruiz all had similar responses.

“2-0 is very risky,” Romero said. “The whole game can change in the second half. ”

Schachner knew “they were coming with everything in the first minutes of the match so they could score on us,” which heightened the pressure to score another goal for the Knights.

“We knew the pressure was going to be high,” Ruiz agreed with her fellow captains about the beginning of the second half. “But we did a good job communicating on the field, which led to our win.”

The Knights kept their defense up for the rest of the match against Imperial Valley, winning with a clean sheet.

The Knights will face off against Cuyamaca on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 3 p.m. at the Knights Soccer Field, 1480 Park Blvd.
