The San Diego City College women’s basketball team continued its winning streak with a 77-66 win over Southwestern College on Friday, Jan. 9 at Harry West Gym.

Although Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play has just begun, the Knights (10-8, 2-0 PCAC) have been able to start off strong, winning their first league game on Jan. 7 against Mesa College.

This PCAC opener was the first time since February 2020 that City had won a game against Mesa College, according to sports information director Gus Celarie.

The two latest wins followed a Dec. 19 victory over Pasadena City, where the Knights won, 71-53, and another 89-44 rout of San Bernardino Valley 10 days later.

Against the Jaguars, sophomore Dahlia Blake carried the Knights with 15 points and 18 rebounds, surpassing her average of 14 rebounds per game.

“If we play 100% we can win anything,” Blake said in an interview with City Times after the game on Dec. 5 against San Bernardino Valley College.

Southwestern guard Ari Mason surpassed her average points per game of 19.1, finishing as the leading scorer with 25 points.

But even with Mason leading the way, the Knights controlled the game against Southwestern through three-plus quarters.

The Jaguars (6-9, 0-1 PCAC) were then able to catch up when Aliyah Perry made a lay-up to tie the game 40-40 for the first time halfway through the third quarter.

Southwestern’s Angelica McBride followed with a jump shot that led to the first lead for the Jaguars, 42-41.

The lead didn’t last long, though, as Layla Castro made a 3-point shot that tied the game once more, 44-44.

Shortly after, Ella Navarro came in off the bench and quickly gained City’s lead back, 44-46, with two minutes left of the third quarter and held until the final buzzer.

The Knights will return home on Jan. 28 at 5 p.m. to play Cuyamaca College at Harry West Gym.
