Yonatan “Yogi” Hernandez, Audio & Spanish Content Editor, City Times

About Me
I am a dedicated storyteller, journalist, and advocate driven by a passion for amplifying underrepresented voices and building bridges within diverse communities. With over 22 years of honorable service in the United States Navy, I bring a solution-oriented, compassionate approach to my work—whether in podcasting, journalism, or leadership.

As a contributor to San Diego City Times, I excelled as both a writer and audio producer. One of my most impactful pieces was a breaking news report on the AH Arts and Humanities Building fire, later classified as arson. This story required swift, accurate coverage, which I achieved by directly engaging with emergency responders, AH Dean Andy MacNeill, and Vice President of Administrative Services John Parker. I also spearheaded Spanish translations and audio production for this and other stories, ensuring accessibility for our diverse audience.

In podcasting, I created The Knights Roundtable, a 12-episode series that highlighted the San Diego City College Veteran Service Center and the inspiring personal journeys of veterans. One of the standout episodes featured Professor Bob Sly, whose fascinating and vibrant story resonated deeply with listeners. Another highlighted Nicole Vargas, whose unwavering dedication to student success and mentorship continues to inspire. These episodes not only celebrated individual achievements but also underscored the Veteran Service Center’s vital role in empowering the campus community.

As a filmmaker, I produced and directed 17 independent video projects that brought powerful stories to life, honing my technical skills while spotlighting the Veteran Service Center’s critical work. These projects strengthened campus unity and showcased the resilience and determination of the veteran community.

Beyond storytelling, I am a committed advocate for systemic change. Serving as chair of the Veteran Caucus, LatinX Caucus, and Undocu-Caucus under the Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC), I championed initiatives such as emergency housing, support for undocumented students, and statewide collaboration among veterans. At San Diego City College, I founded the Veterans Club, creating vital resources and hosting impactful events like Día de los Muertos and the Veteran Panel. These efforts fostered a welcoming and supportive space for students, where I have proudly saved lives during times of crisis, guided peers toward meaningful careers, and helped them achieve their academic and personal goals.

Whether I’m telling powerful stories, leading transformative initiatives, or building platforms for marginalized voices, I remain deeply committed to creating meaningful change. My mission is simple but profound: to ensure every individual feels seen, heard, and supported in their journey.
