I’ve just recently seen “Sonic: The Hedgehog” and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. In most situations, game-based movie adaptations are unsuccessful in the box office and fall flat with the audience. However, I really think they nailed it with this film and it is one of the best video game adaptations that has ever been made.

As the film opens to Sonic’s origin, the film takes place in present day Vancouver Sonic is voiced by Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey portrays antagonist Dr. Ivo Robotnik (Dr. Eggman) and James Marsden plays the town’s head sheriff, Tom Wachowski. Alone and in hiding, Sonic ends up losing control of his power, causing a massive power outage that gains the attention of the U.S. government. In response, the government sends in the excessive Dr. Robotnik, a genius machinist who over abuses his power to figure out what caused the outage. Sonic then seeks the aid of Wachowski.

For a video game adaptation, all actors did good but I have to give Jim Carrey more recognition. He really made this film what it is. His over the top acting and witty unpredictable responses keep you laughing and interested in the film the entire time. This was really a great casting choice.

There was a lot I liked about this film. The story is filled with cheesy dialogue and action comedy, holding good pacing throughout while maintaining an important message that you should lend a helping hand to anyone, regardless of race and color.

Even with a rating of PG-13, this is definitely a movie for all ages. While the movie had the action and comedy for the younger audience, the nostalgia factor that the film delivered catered to the adult generation that grew up with the iconic 90’s character and video games.

I would recommend this to almost anyone. This is a good film!
