City Times Media reporter Susana Serrano was back at Hunger Action Day, hosted by San Diego City College, on Oct. 19. The food drive events are held twice a month on campus thanks to partnerships with Feeding San Diego and San Diego Food Bank.

Serrano took home fresh produce such as celery, grapefruit and pears. She also picked up an assortment of canned and dry food, including vegetarian chili and pancake mix.

In this week’s #CityCookingChallenge, Serrano mixed items from the food drive and her own kitchen to make a delicious and healthy pear oatmeal. She used her own milk and cinnamon to cook the dish and topped it with fresh banana slices, peanut butter and chia seeds.

The dish can also be made vegan, Serrano explained in the tutorial, by using coconut milk and oat milk.
