On Friday, May 16, 2025, the Chicano Studies Department came together to celebrate its graduating students.
The ceremony began with a land acknowledgement to the Kumeyaay Nation followed by a performance by Danza Mexicáyotl that opened the graduation celebration.
Keynote alum and EOPS counselor Ismael Carrillo spoke about his experience and challenges he was faced with while being a student.
“I laughed here, I cried here, I failed here,” Carrillo said. “But because of the community I was able to create here, I continued to move and work toward my future.”
Another keynote speaker, Sergio Montiel, graduating in history and Chicano Studies spoke about the history of Chicano activism.
“Historically, Chicanx students have utilized their voices to demand change and challenge the status quo,” Montiel said. “Pushing for representation that ultimately led to the establishment of Chicano Studies programs and greater inclusivity in education.”

Crystal Cruz, who’s earning her associate degree in Chicano Studies, spoke about the positive impact that the community she found at City College had on her and how it changed her.
“MEChA introduced me to community, and that is something I will continue creating throughout my life,” Cruz said, expanding on her experiences being in the club.
Andrea Ramos, who is receiving her associate of Science in Biology Allied Health Track and associate of Arts in Chicana and Chicano Studies acknowledged how graduating students have prevailed throughout their time at City College.
“This journey has been anything but ordinary,” Ramos said. “Here I am celebrating not only my own personal achievements but our collective strength and success as a community.”
Graduating students will attend Commencement on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at 5 p.m. in the Spreckels Organ Pavilion at Balboa Park to finish their celebration.
