The Balboa Park Committee moved forward with finalizing the residential and non-residential parking rates for Balboa Park at its Nov. 6 meeting.
According to the presentation at the meeting, the implementation of these rates will begin in January 2026.

The discussion of paid parking at Balboa Park has been the talk of San Diego residents since its planned inception. At the Oct. 2 committee meeting, a presenter on the parking plan stated that parking would remain free until the annual rates are decided upon.

“However, (the San Diego City Council) said we cannot start to charge for paid parking until we establish a quarterly and annual pass,” said Emily Piatanesi, a presenter from the office of Mayor Todd Gloria.
San Diego community members voiced concerns that the upcoming parking would affect the surrounding communities that rely on free parking in Balboa Park, which includes San Diego City College students.

San Diego community member Jackie Dowling holds a free German Shepard training in the San Diego Zoo parking lot and expressed her concern for the event.
“This parking thing is going to affect whether we’re able to continue to provide this free service to anybody who wants to come,” Dowling said.
