California’s Secretary of State Shirley Weber released the official list of names that will appear on the ballot in the primary elections happening on June 2.
The list, which was released on March 26, includes all state-level positions, including governor, lieutenant governor, and all 52 of the state’s seats in the House of Representatives.
The list also includes those running for United States Representative in District 48, which is currently the only Republican-led district in the county of San Diego.
For governor, 61 candidates are listed – 24 Democrat, 12 Republican, two independent and 23 with no party preference. Among those included are Xavier Becerra (D), Eric Swalwell (D) and Tom Steyer (D).
Attorney Becerra, 68, was the Secretary of the U.S. Health and Human Services Department in the Biden administration.
He is the first Latino to hold that position.
During his time in that position, and as an attorney, Becerra has taken action such as campaigning against “pay-for-delay” schemes by pharmaceutical companies and petitioning to protect Amazon workers against COVID-19 exposure during the early stages of the pandemic.
Becerra recently penned an open letter to the University of Southern California after the organizers of the now-cancelled gubernatorial debate were accused of intentionally excluding people of color, including him, in their selection process.
Swalwell, 45, currently represents California’s 14th Congressional District in Alameda County. He formerly served as an overseer of the CIA and assisted Senator Adam Schiff in his investigation into possible Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Following the events of the Jan. 6 riots, Swalwell was appointed as one of nine impeachment managers to organize and deliver impeachment articles against President Trump.
Swalwell has repeatedly been vocal against the deployment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in California.
Earlier this year, he introduced the ICE Out Act in the House of Representatives, which would strip immunity from ICE agents if they are found to violate the Fourth Amendment.
Steyer, 68, is a billionaire transitioning into politics with a focus on issues such as the cost of living for California residents.
Last year, he was one of the most notable figures in support of California’s Proposition 50, which redrew the state’s congressional districts.
The list for District 48 Representative, which now covers eastern San Diego County along with West Riverside County toward Palm Springs after that redistricting, includes 12 names – nine Democrats and two Republicans.
The seat is currently held by Republican Darrell Issa, who is not running for reelection.
Among those are San Diego City Councilmember Marni Von Wilpert (D), San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond (R) and civil rights organizer Luis F. Reyna (NPP).
California is a top-two primary state, meaning all candidates will appear on the same ballot regardless of political affiliation.
The two candidates with the highest number of votes in June will move on to the general elections in November.
The pair can, but is not required to be, from opposing political parties.
Voters are also able to check their voting status online today.
The last day to register to vote in the primary elections is May 18, but in-person voting or visiting the Registrar’s office through June 2 is still an option, according to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters.
Update, March 26: Story has been updated to add the ages of two candidates.
