As Thanksgiving gets closer, we are all getting ready to celebrate the holiday, and with that comes planning what dishes you will be sharing with our loved ones.

This week’s Hunger Action Day at San Diego City College provided all the traditional side dishes you need for your turkey day.

Some of the items included instant mashed potatoes, instant stove top stuffing, instant cornbread mix, oranges, chicken broth and cucumbers.

In the latest #CityCookingChallenge, City Times Media’s Susana Serrano shows you how to spruce up your instant side dishes.

She turned the cornbread mix into a delicious savory corn cake and the stuffing into a flavorful hearty side dish.

Serrano also used additional items from her kitchen such as sour cream, both cream and canned corn, and eggs to make the cake batter.

She topped it off with bacon, green onions and shredded cheese.

For the stuffing, she first cooked onions and celery in butter.

Then, she added minced garlic, fresh rosemary and thyme. Serrano mixed everything into the stuffing.

Finally, she added the chicken broth and mixed it with melted butter to make the stuffing both rich and flavorful.
