The San Diego City College women’s basketball team (4-4) wasted no time continuing its winning ways, cruising to a victory off a 10-day holiday break by dominating the hapless Barstow Vikings, 80-50, at Harry West Gym on Wednesday, Dec. 3.

The Knights’ offensive attack was as crisp as it has been all season.

City had four players who scored double-digit points. The Knights were led by Maddox Weisskopf, the sophomore from Patrick Henry High School, who had 18 points and shot 4-for-9 from 3-point range.

“It was nice to be sinking those threes finally,” Weisskopf said in a post-game interview. “Coach lately has been like, five threes in row after practice. So I think that has definitely helped.”

Head coach Andrea Aguiliar-Montalban brought the team in for practices during the break, Weisskopf said, ensuring the team was ready for this game against Barstow.

On the opposing side, the Barstow Vikings, led by head coach Kaitlyn Parks, arrived with only six players on the roster, five of whom were available for the game.

“We’re grateful to have the players that are here,” Parks said. “We’ll play with the cards that have been dealt and go out there and compete.”

The Knights got off to a hot start behind their smothering defense, holding Barstow to only nine points in the first quarter, causing eight turnovers.

Things really got cooking for City in the third quarter when they outscored the Vikings, 24-5.

The lead would ultimately balloon to 35 points in the third quarter as the Knights hit a season-high six 3-pointers.

With the game mostly out of reach, Barstow would be forced to play with only four players late in the fourth quarter after Leanne Domingo fouled out.

“You have to have an insane amount of cardio to play with only five players for a whole game,” Weisskopf said of the Barstow squad. “They held their own for a while.”

One of those Barstow players who played all 40 minutes, Kamilyah Starr Williams, would lead all scorers with 25 points and 11 rebounds.

The Knights will look to build on this win when they play the second game of this Crossover Tournament at home against San Bernardino (1-6) on Friday, Dec. 5, at 11 a.m.
