Knights lose vs Palomar, 82-36

City’s  women’s basketball team (14-13) played a tough match-up against the Palomar College Comets (18-7), with the Knights losing their last home game of the season.

Six sophomores on  the team were presented a gift basket and flowers before the game for their time playing basketball for City College.

Elissa St. Julien and Dahlia Blake were the only two players  to make points, having the worst first half of the season, entering the second half 45-6.

Although this was a tough game for the Knights, it was not a representation of the season they had.

“Same story, different group of girls,” Andrea Aguilar-Montalban, head coach of the team, said to a City Times reporter during a pregame interview when asked about the constant turnover of players each year.

With 8 minutes left in the second quarter, Blake was sent  to the bench due to an injury to her ankle. She later came back with crutches, indicating she was  out for the remainder of the game.

It might not have been the outcome the Knights wanted, but St. Julien became the top scorer of the game with 15 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Maddox Weisskopf with 9 points and 4 rebounds.

The game concluded 82-36, being the lowest number of points the Knights have scored this season.

To con

clude their regular season, The Knights will play against Cuyamaca at 5 p.m. on Feb. 20 at Cuyamaca College.

Knights win against Southwestern, 83-66

After clinching their first undefeated season since 2018, the Knights have been crowned Pacific Coast Athletic Conference champions for the third year in a row after their 81-71 win against Miramar.

Before the game began, five sophomores were recognized for their dedication to the basketball program through their time at City.

“It’s always weird on sophomore night. The guys are emotional, their families are here, and the thought of it being their last official home game can add a bit of weirdness,” head coach Mitch Charlens said. “But we shook it off and played with more force in the second half.”

Emmanuel Barnett, Southwestern point guard, made a three-point shot 5 minutes into the first half to tie up the game. At no point after this did the Jaguars tie or lead in the game.

Freshman guard Dylan Griffin scored a total of 22 points with 6 assists, becoming the top scorer of the game, followed by both Junior Camacho and Santana Huff with 12 points.

The Knights continue their undefeated conference season, with an 83-66 win over Southwestern College.

The team is now pivoting into playoff games in which they will know more about the schedule by Sunday afternoon, according to Charlens.

“We practice in a way that we’re trying to get our first win, and we keep a one-game schedule type of mentality,’ sophomore Pharaoh Amadi said in a post-game interview when asked about how the team will be approaching the last game. “It’s about to be win or go home, so we got to stay hungry and fight.”

To end off their regular season, The Knights will play against Palomar at 7 p.m. on Feb. 20 at Palomar College.
